So you want to start a business... how do you know if you're truly ready?

When I was first starting out in my coaching business, I had a few clients who may have *thought* they were ready, but they weren't. And that's okay, because I'm a firm believer that everyone is always right where they should be. I mean, don't get me wrong, they absolutely made progress, but it made it harder and slower, because they weren't fully ready. It became a situation where I began to realize that I wanted it more for them than they did for themselves, and resistance started to set in. This will make the road to entrepreneurship WAY longer for you.

So if you have the desire to start a business... here are a few questions to ask yourself about your readiness:
1) Is there a major life/career transition occuring that is prompting your motivation to start a business?
2) Have you made the decision and commitment with yourself that, YES, now is the time to start a business?
3) Are you communicating your decision and commitment about starting a business to loved ones?
4) Do you want to own a business more than others want it for you?
5) Do you want it so badly, that your drive and self-discipline are keeping you laser focused on this goal?

So if you've been noodling on the idea of starting your own business, ask yourself the questions above. If you answered yes to these questions, then you are REA-DY yo! However, just because you're ready, you still may not know how or where to begin.

Why is there so much pressure put on us to be the best, or to be perfect, or to get the highest score, or to advance to the next thing quickly?

Have you told yourself, "I should be further along by now.”? Or do you beat yourself up when making a mistake? Especially at work! Maybe you're spending countless hours redoing your work out of fear it won't be perfect? or you're afraid to share an idea because you don't think it's the best one? or you're hearing that you aren't good enough for that promotion, and you're believing it yourself? These are all systemic, societal traits of what it means to work in Corporate America. I used to be told at work that I didn't speak up enough, and when I did speak, I was told I didn't speak perfectly. Being told this enough, I began to doubt myself and my capabilities. That used to hold me back in so many ways.

But what if I said you don't have to live in this fear or set unattainable standards for yourself to be successful and happy? It took me years, but I finally realized that I could never change the competitive, critical nature of a corporate company, so if I wanted to see a change, I would have to create my own business for me to work in myself. So that's what I did, and that's now what I help others do today.

Don't let the pressure of being perfect hold you down. You CAN find success and happiness doing something you love, but it may mean creating your own business that aligns with who you are, your values, and your needs specifically. And by the way, you don't need the "perfect plan" to start a business either. You just need the courage to start, the drive to keep going, and the self-discipline to put in the work.

You can be successful and happy in your own business without being perfect or the "best." In fact, it's almost a requirement to NOT be perfect. You just have to be yourself and let yourself do it already!
